Our Materials
With so many materials to choose from, many people find it helpful to see images of finished installations. Seeing small samples is good; viewing whole slabs is better, but seeing stone in a real kitchen or bathroom is best. Pictures of finished installations make it so much easier to imagine how a possible material could work for you – or just help you to narrow down the options.
Granite & Quartzite
Marble
Marble was traditionally used in kitchens for its natural beauty and coolness for pastry-making. The advent of diamond tooling to cut and polish harder materials made granite worktops feasible and stole marble’s thunder – for a while. In recent years, we have witnessed a resurgence in popularity as clients have once again come to appreciate the translucence, feel, natural striations and dynamic movement found in marble.
Marbles vary in hardness, and some may not be practical for all applications. But, given expert advice on selection and on the maintenance involved, marble can add its own unique drama to any scheme. With many colours available, prices and block sizes vary widely. Please talk to our team or industry partners for more information.
Quartz and Reconstituted stones
Sintered and Ceramic Stones
Sintered and ceramic stones are produced by applying great pressure and high temperatures to mineral materials. Unlike quartz, or engineered stone, sintered and ceramic stones are manufactured without any resin content. For this reason they are better able to withstand ultra-violet light, extreme heat, aggressive chemicals, and abrasion. On the other hand, they are generally more brittle than quartz and many natural stones, being more susceptible to impact damage and to breakage under bending.
In most cases, early ceramic worktops were patterned only on the surface, but more recently some materials are more “Full-bodied”. The technology in this area is developing continually.
Ceramics and sintered particle stones have grown in popularity alongside the trends for outdoor kitchens and industrial matte textures. Here we explore some different options but do ask our team about the different brands available.
