Our Materials

With so many materials to choose from, many people find it helpful to see images of finished installations. Seeing small samples is good; viewing whole slabs is better, but seeing stone in a real kitchen or bathroom is best. Pictures of finished installations make it so much easier to imagine how a possible material could work for you – or just help you to narrow down the options.

Natural Stone

Granite & Quartzite

Granite is not only beautiful but also a practical choice for your kitchen. Materials sold as granite in the UK encompasses a wide range of natural rocks with different structural and mineral compositions. Some lighter stones do require more maintenance than darker and denser options, but each stone is individual. Do ask our team for more information or see our informative Rapid Guide to Stone Materials. Materials sold as granite come in a wide range of colours. Here we show you a selection of some of the stones available. We hold a range of colours in stock but also buy in from a selection of wholesalers; please see our Industry Partners. Natural quartzites, formed by crystals of quartz fusing together under heat and pressure to create large crystal structures, are extremely hard but can also be a bit brittle. As with all natural materials, each stone has it’s own nature. Quartzites have gained popularity for their naturally more striated aesthetic than granite, and thanks to improvements in technology like our waterjet cutting machine, they are easier to cut than ever before. These exceptionally hard surfaces particularly lend themselves to Leathered and Satinato finishes bringing texture to any scheme.

Marble

Marble was traditionally used in kitchens for its natural beauty and coolness for pastry-making. The advent of diamond tooling to cut and polish harder materials made granite worktops feasible and stole marble’s thunder – for a while. In recent years, we have witnessed a resurgence in popularity as clients have once again come to appreciate the translucence, feel, natural striations and dynamic movement found in marble.

Marbles vary in hardness, and some may not be practical for all applications. But, given expert advice on selection and on the maintenance involved, marble can add its own unique drama to any scheme. With many colours available, prices and block sizes vary widely. Please talk to our team or industry partners for more information.

Man-made stones

Quartz and Reconstituted stones

In recent years quartz and mineral reconstituted stones have overtaken most natural stones in popularity due to wide range of options, consistency, and extremely low porosity. The Minerals in reconstituted stones can have all the impurities removed to make pure white and coloured options that are not available in natural stones. Current trends to marble-look decors have served to push their popularity further as a lower maintenance alternative to real marble. Quartz and reconstituted stones are not as suitable for outside use, extreme heat, and exposure to the elements. Here we show a selection of materials, but this is just the tip of the iceberg as new materials are produced all the time by a large number of manufacturers and brands of quartz. Slabs sizes are typically smaller than natural stones, please talk to our team for maximum island sizes and help to narrow down your choices.

Sintered and Ceramic Stones

Sintered and ceramic stones are produced by applying great pressure and high temperatures to mineral materials. Unlike quartz, or engineered stone, sintered and ceramic stones are manufactured without any resin content. For this reason they are better able to withstand ultra-violet light, extreme heat, aggressive chemicals, and abrasion. On the other hand, they are generally more brittle than quartz and many natural stones, being more susceptible to impact damage and to breakage under bending.

In most cases, early ceramic worktops were patterned only on the surface, but more recently some materials are more “Full-bodied”. The technology in this area is developing continually.

Ceramics and sintered particle stones have grown in popularity alongside the trends for outdoor kitchens and industrial matte textures. Here we explore some different options but do ask our team about the different brands available.
